Swara Bhasker has once again brought her career choices into the spotlight. In a recent Rise and Fall Season 2 episode, the actor said her stand had cost her work. Her comments came after a contestant’s relative offered strategy advice on the show.
Swara Bhasker Hits Back at Reality Show Advice
As reported by Indian Express, Swara Bhasker is a contestant on Rise and Fall Season 2, which Virender Sehwag hosts. The trouble began when influencer Shreya Kalra suggested she tone down her diplomacy and concentrate on her own strategy. The advice may have been well meant, but it clearly did not land. Bhasker thanked her at first, though her frustration soon showed.
In her reply, Bhasker made her position clear. She told Kalra, “Shreya, respectfully, I am who I am.” She then added that reality shows were not a route she wanted for her career. The conversation ended there, though her feelings did not.
When Kalra left, the actor turned her irritation toward online creators and reality television figures who hand out tips. “I have ruined my career by taking a stand for things that matter,” she said. She set that choice against promoting every brand that pays, and said she wanted no lecturing from such voices.
The Padmaavat Row Behind the Remark
Her sharp response also reflects an older tension. The latest wave of criticism began after a talk in Delhi on 31 August. She spoke with actor Oroon Das and writer Sujata Prasad at the India International Centre. There, she explained why she wrote an open letter to Sanjay Leela Bhansali in 2018. Her letter criticised the jauhar sequence in Padmaavat, a film she had earlier stood by amid the Karni Sena protests.
After the backlash, Swara Bhasker took to Instagram to clarify her stance. She denied labelling Rani Padmavati or her companions as cowards. Instead, she said she was describing the reaction a survivor of sexual violence could have to the film’s ending. Meanwhile, she called the controversy an old one and added, “You are lying about what I said.”
In the Delhi conversation, Bhasker also said that the open letter hurt her career. Several male directors phoned her afterwards, and a few asked why a film actor was getting into politics. She added that acting remains a deep love, which makes getting fewer projects than she would like sting.

What Swara Bhasker Chose Over Easy Endorsements
Taken together, the two episodes paint a fairly consistent picture. On a show that revolves around strategy, the actor seems unwilling to trade her views for a safer image. At the Delhi event, she also rejected the label of being brave and spoke about the privilege that shields her. In her view, that same privilege leaves her with fewer excuses for keeping quiet.
The show began streaming on 26 September and will run for 42 days. Since the game keeps shifting power between contestants, viewers will be curious to see how she reacts next. Her remark also shows how a casual piece of advice can reopen a much bigger debate about speaking up.
Her past choices help explain that attitude. In 2015, she starred in Nil Battey Sannata despite warnings that it could damage her career. The film ended up as her first solo success, which suggests that backing a difficult choice has worked for her before. She also links her public activism to the things she loves, including acting, her husband, and India.
